Description: Dr. Lewis will relay recent research that supports the use of dietary interventions for individuals on the autism continuum. She will describe in detail the varieties of diet that help reduce the digestive problems so common to autistic children. Lisa also will describe the many behavioural improvements that often accompany the removal of offending foods. Finally, she will give practical guidelines for changing diet routines and keeping to the new regimen.
Bio: Lisa Lewis is the mother of a child with autism who has benefited greatly from dietary intervention. Lisa authored Special Diets for Special Kids and Special Diets for Special Kids Two. She regularly pens articles for The Autism and Aspergers Digest and Sully's Living Without magazine and she contributed to the book Biological Treatments for Autism and PDD, edited by Dr. William Shaw.

Description: Mr. Shore has customized this session for parents, educators, and other professionals caring for children challenged by ASDs, PDD, and related difficulties. As with his other presentations, Stephen uses the autobiographical format to focus this interactive session on understanding how the environment is perceived by those on the autism spectrum and developing practical strategies for helping these children.
Bio: Diagnosed with "Atypical Development with strong autistic tendencies" Stephen Shore was viewed as "too sick" to be treated on an outpatient basis and recommended for institutionalization. Nonverbal until four, and with much help from his parents, teachers, and others, Stephen Shore is now completing his doctoral degree in special education at Boston University with a focus on helping people on the autism spectrum develop their capacities to the fullest extent possible.

Description: Dr. Walsh talks about Metallothionein Deficiency in Autism Spectrum Disorders. Scientists have discovered that metallothionein is the body's primary defense against toxic metals in the environment. He explains this discovery in-depth: how it effects people with autism and how to combat this defiency using special techniques.
Bio: William Walsh, Ph.D. is president and co-founder of the Health Research Institute of Chicago and its clinical arm, the Carl Pfeiffer Treatment Center. He worked for 22 years as a research scientist/engineer, and has authored more than 150 journal articles and technical reports. A main area of interest has been patterns of trace-metal imbalances in violent individuals, and he is conducting research on crime prevention. Dr. Walsh collaborated with Carl Pfeiffer, M.D., Ph.D., who spent many years researching biochemical imbalances in psychotic populations.

Bio: Peter Gerhardt, Ph.D is a Consultant whose private practice is based in Baltimore, MD. He is the author or co-author of articles and book chapters on the needs of adults with autism spectrum disorder, the school-to-work-transition process and analysis and intervention of problematic behavior. He has presented nationally and internationally on these topics.He currently serves on numerous professional advisory boards, including the Autism Society of America, MAAP Services, NJ COSAC and ASPEN. In 2002 Dr Gerhardt became the Chairman of the Scientific Council of the Organization for Autism Research

Bio: Nathan Ory, M.A. is a registered psychologist who has worked in Victoria, British Columbia since 1978 with children and adults with mentally handicapping conditions. He specializes in clients with autistic features, extremely challenging behavior, and diagnosis with a concurrent mental illness.

Bio: Temple is a gifted animal scientist who obtained her Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1989. Today, she teaches courses on livestock behaviour and facility design at Colorado State Univeristy and consults with the livestock industry on facility design, livestock handling, and animal welfare. She has designed one third of all the livestock-handling facilities in the United States.
